Changes to our Matcha Menu
As of [INSERT FINAL DATE], there will be three new core matcha offerings.
We are retiring the titles Kodemari and Then & Now and are adding a third Tier 1 matcha.
Kodemari will now be called Yozora, Then and Now will be called Minamoto, and an offering is debuting from new terroir called Komei.
Why is this happening?
This is in response to unprecedented demand, shortages and the ongoing Matcha Boom. Matcha is enjoying more popularity than ever before and at Spirit, we are committed to the belief that tea has inherent value.
There will be no price change and the quality commensurate with the taste, tradition, and craft behind matcha you’ve come to expect.
When we first set out to source matcha ten years ago, we were incredibly proud of the producers we were able to forge relationships with and continue to work with to this day. We are lucky we met them so early, as many are no longer accepting new clients.
In that time, we sought to mimic the single origin (and sometimes single garden) strategy we kept with our loose leaf teas and for many years, were able to do so. We’ve grown, and so matcha demand, exponentially. During the initial surge of the Matcha Boom, outages beyond our control began to happen.
What's Next?
Now, after over a year of tasting and formulating, we are going to mitigate that risk by reframing each of the big two offerings into terroir-driven blends, and adding a third, to boost their quantity and keep their quality within our control.
Because of the amount of tasting and effort put into pre-formulating this shift, we do not anticipate any discernible change in taste in profile for Kodemari or Then & Now. If you are not carrying Kodemari or Then & Now, there will be no changes to your offering.
If you are carrying Tier 2 or Tier 3 matcha, these will remain single origin (and sometimes single cultivar) matchas. We encourage you to continue to push the paradigm of matcha appreciation to your customers.
We hope that, rather than dishearten you, this shift in product offerings serves as inspiration to further deepen your appreciation for matcha, slowing down and savoring the qualities of this endangered category of tea. We remain in close contact with our producers, monitoring market conditions in real time as new harvests arrive in 2026 and beyond.
We are grateful for your understanding and patience. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to dodey@spirittea.co and they will be able to assist.
