Hualien Honey Aroma
It is difficult to source Mr. Hsieh’s tea. Customarily, his harvest is spoken for well in advance. This year, our team was on site in Hualien to purchase a small lot. He calls his autumn harvests “smoother, with a sweeter taste” and Hsieh is known for his generous solar witherings in production. The combined difficulties of small acreage, irregular bug bite, and an increasingly unpredictable typhoon season make for a dauntingly low yield. The Da Ye (oolong) cultivar crossed the Strait in the 19th century and TRES has since encouraged its uptake to produce bug-bitten black teas in the region, playing uniquely to Hualien's tropical latitude. Notes of pumpkin bread, baking spice and maple syrup.
