Wuyi and Anxi, county neighbors and renowned regions of tea history, possess coveted cultivars beloved in oolong and black tea production. For centuries, the tea plant has traveled migrated the two regions, farmers’ experimental varieties adapting to the cloud-scaped mountains and rivers of the land. Meizhan is an Anxi-born, classically plump and fruity variety beloved as a green oolong; today, in the hands of second-generation tea producer, Ms. Pan, it is modernized into a black tea. Sweet, spicy, and succulent, this gongfu reincarnate of a vintage variety makes for a delightful dessert-like cup. Notes of caramel-covered apple, star anise, and peach skin.
