Mrs. Saikia has spent the past decade converting this estate in Borpathar, Assam into an organic and biodynamic operation. To help reclaim Assam’s reputation from erstwhile commodity and breakfast teas, Mrs. Saikia dreamed of starting an Orthodox (handcrafted tea) production garden while honoring the land and the beauty of the terroir. After a September dormancy, tea plants nestled in the Brahmaputra river valley reawaken for a softer, less tannic flush—perfect for highlighting the subtler beauties of a handmade tea. Softer daylight hours and the clay-rich soils of the valley combine for a delightfully nuanced experience. Notes of muscat grape, wild-fermented rum and marshmallow.
